Job description

This post offers the possibility of studying for a PhD at the renowned Transport Research Laboratory in the UK.

The PhD will involve developing novel driving scenarios in a sophisticated driving simulator and measuring driver performance and behaviour. The scenarios will cover a range of driving situations and involve simulated vehicles that have some degree of automation (e.g. automated close following, speed control or convoy driving). Observations and measurement of behaviour of the participant in an «unequipped» simulator vehicle will inform about the overall traffic situation to be expected in the future.

TRL has a range of microsimulation and traffic models available (and modelling experts to call upon) and it is anticipated that some aspects of the observed behaviour will be incorporated within existing models to predict overall effects (e.g. traffic throughput) and to illustrate the implications of the work.

The student will need to work with software to develop the simulator scenarios and for traffic modelling. Interpersonal skills will also be required in interacting with participants and a human factors/psychology background would be appropriate to design and interpret the experimental aspects.

In addition to the PhD work, a rich interaction within the European project ADAPTATION is envisaged where special training in research will be offered. There may also be scope for the student to work within other national or international projects where this will be beneficial to TRL and to the student’s PhD studies.

Requirements

All candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English.

A previous numerate degree or one in human factors/psychology and a familiarity with software is required. Enthusiasm for transport technology would be an advantage.
